How to properly configure your router and improve the Wi-Fi signal
The experts told Gazeta.Ru what devices interfere with the Wi-Fi router, how to get the Internet from wiring, and whether it is worth buying gadgets to improve the signal. construction bolts
Self-test
If you are experiencing problems with the speed of your home
Internet, first of all you should check the tariff plan, Pavel Sumtsov, editor
of the gadgets direction of Citylink magazine, advised Gazeta.Ru. “Perhaps you
have a low-speed tariff or network speed is limited due to exhaustion of
traffic or late payment of the tariff,” he said.
It is also central to squared if all the necessary cables
and power wire are connected, if the indicators that indicate the Internet
signal are on. Sometimes problems can be associated with kinks in the Internet
cable. If this is the case, straighten the cable and fold it in a circular
motion to avoid new kinks - this can help restore speed.
Move router
It is not a good idea to keep your router in a confined
space such as a closet. Walls and even bookshelves can weaken the Wi-Fi signal.
Moving your router can dramatically improve speed and coverage. A universal tip
is not to put it in a corner, under a cupboard, or in a drawer. Also, due to
poor ventilation, the router may overheat, said the editor of Citylink.
It is better to place the router in the center of the
apartment so that the signal spreads to all rooms. The expert noticed that it
is not necessary to hang the router very high or low, a height of 1-2 meters
above the floor is enough.
If the router is used on stationary devices, then their
location should be considered from the point of view of keeping game consoles,
laptops and other gadgets closer to the router. On the contrary, gadgets that
do not require a high connection speed can be pushed a little further.
If possible, keep the router away from devices that transmit
electromagnetic waves. These include baby monitors, wireless keyboards and
microwave ovens.
Change channel or range
Wi-Fi signal has several channels, and the router uses only
one of them to communicate with devices throughout the house. If neighbors live
close, and your routers use the same channel, then freezes are possible. In
such situations, switching to another channel helps, experts from Kaspersky
Daily advise.
For the settings, you need to study the paper documentation
or look at the instructions on the Internet. First you should try to tune your
router to channel 1, 6 or 11 - they usually have the least amount of
interference when connecting multiple devices.
Currently, a huge number of routers use dual-band 2.4GHz and
5GHz data transmission technology. The variance between the two can often be
determined by the name of the network. A specialist from the provider usually
configures the router in such a way that the 5 GHz network will have the number
5 in the name of the network.
According to Pavel Sumtsov, the 2.4 GHz mode provides a
larger coverage radius, but the Internet speed is slower than in the 5 GHz
mode. In addition, more devices support the 2.4 GHz frequency, and therefore
the channels on this frequency are often congested.
He recommended switching to 5GHz for PCs, smartphones and
tablets if they support that frequency.
Also, in the settings of the router, it may be possible to
make one of the frequencies a priority for certain devices.
Upgrade your router or buy a Wi-Fi repeater
The range of Wi-Fi signal coverage differs from router to
router. For a large house, it is better to find a router that can connect to
repeaters that transmit the signal to distant corners. A more expensive, but
also a high-quality option in such cases is a nodal system, that is, a set of
several devices that will give a signal in different parts of the house.
According to Pavel Sumtsov, for apartments you can get by
with a simpler system, that is, one repeater. “For a country house, I would
recommend a Mesh network: it is easier to scale and configure,” the specialist
explained.
Gadgets are powered from an outlet and independently connect
to the Internet from a router, and then amplify the signal. As a rule, gadgets
help to get rid of most Wi-Fi dead zones.
However, the amplified wireless signals will still not be as
strong as directly from the router. In this regard, repeaters and amplifiers
should be used not for connecting the main gadgets, but for additional ones
that are used irregularly.
Before purchasing, it is important to make sure that the
Wi-Fi standard (e.g. 802.11ac) of the repeater and amplifier matches that of
your home router.
